Approval of VMware software maintenance renewal and upgrade from CDW-G

Background

VMWare is the software the City uses to create and mange our virtual computer environment. VMware virtualization lets us run multiple virtual machines on a single physical machine, with each virtual machine sharing the resources of that one physical computer across multiple environments saving the city money by not having to purchase large quantities of physical servers. Today we are operating 130 virtual servers on nine physical servers in our primary data center.

Each year we renew the annual maintenance for VMware licensing used to manage the virtual environment . In additional to the maintenance, this year we are upgrading to the enterprise version to allow us to take advantage of additional security and networking features. The cost for annual maintenance is $30,799.64 and the version upgrade is $14,230.08. This is available for purchase from CDW under Tennessee state contract #45290.

Staff Recommendation

Staff recommends purchase of the VMware renewal and upgrade of software from CDW-G for a total cost of $45,029.72.
