Information
Subject
Authorization of Expenditure from the John P. Holt Bequest for Plaques at the Library
Background
On October 26, 2017, the City Commission passed Resolution 2017-78, accepting the bequest from the estate of O'Delle K. Holt and authorizing the renaming  of the Library as "The John P. Holt Brentwood Library".  The City Commission subsequently authorized the expenditure of $15,665 from the Holt funds for costs associated with the renaming.  This included the retrofitting of signage and other branding-related changes that were necessary for the new name and redesigned logo.

Since last fall, discussions with the City Commission, Library Board, and Historic Commission have led to the determination that two recognition plaques are needed at the entrance of the Library.  One plaque will acknowledge the generous bequest from the Holt estate, and the other will acknowledge the enslaved people who worked on the Holt Plantation and thus helped make the bequest possible. The cost of the bronze plaques (18" x 12", renderings attached) will be $2,100, inclusive of shipping.

Any expenditure of Holt bequest funds must be authorized by the City Commission.  Please contact the Assistant City Manager with any questions.
