Approval to Purchase Replacement Traffic Detection System for the Concord Road & I-65 S/B Intersection.

Background

The intersection of Concord Road and I-65 Southbound uses an Autoscope Encore video detection system to help control efficient traffic movements. On Sunday, May 7, 2023, this area experienced a heavy electrical storm. Unfortunately, one of the video detection system cameras was impacted by one of the many recorded lightning strikes affecting that area. The Encore system has been discontinued by the manufacturer, requiring us to replace the entire video detection system with the current Autoscope Vision sytem. Because the Autoscope system is the software we use throughout the existing video detection system, and Southern Lighting & Traffic Systems is the only vendor that distributes to our area, this is effectively a sole source purchase.

Staff Recommendation

Staff recommends immediate approval to order and replace the damaged video detection system at Concord Road and I-65 Southbound. A claim has been filed with the City's insurance provider, Public Entity Partners.

Fiscal Impact:

The $29,500.00 expense will be paid from the Public Works operating budget and a budget amendment will include this expense together with an anticipated revenue from the insurance reimbursement.
