NetMotion is the VPN application used by Police and Fire Mobile Data to securely connect all mobile data computers (MDCs) back to the City’s network. This allows the Police Department and Fire Department to run Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and other applications securely over cellular networks.
NetMotion recently released Version 12 of their software which is a major release that includes enhanced data collection allowing the Mobility client to proxy all data in and out of the client system. This allows NetMotion visibility into applications, resources and networks accessed by client users. This will allow Technology Department staff to visualize this data through a wide range of dashboards that offer insight into the health of the City’s network; and the ability to launch bandwidth tests and connectivity diagnostics using policy or enable clients to initiate a test. These tests can diagnose a failed connection, detect lost access to Mobile Data resources, and help to quickly diagnose problems in the field.
Version 12 will also include more features on the backend and provide the Technology Department with more redundancy on the NetMotion servers by allowing NetMotion to remain online when applying security updates. Additionally, diagnostic licensing used to be purchased separately, but with Version 12 it will be included when device licenses are purchased or renewed.
The annual renewal is $7,300 and the upgrade to the new v12 platform costs $2,030.41, plus $1,000 for four hours of technical support for a total of $10,330.41. This will be funded from the Emergency Communications District fund.
