Resolution 2024-43 - Amendment to the Grant Contract with the State of Tennessee for Law Enforcement Academy Cadet Recruitment and Retention.

Background

On August 14, 2023, the City Commission passed Resolution 2023-83 to enter into a Grant Contract with the State of Tennessee for Law Enforcement Academy Cadet Recruitment and Retention. The grant will help with the local share of training costs for new police officers, including paid Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy (TLETA) tuition, training uniforms, and additional professional development. The grant will provide the City of Brentwood with free tuition for every police officer who graduates from TLETA, along with $5,000 per officer to assist in the continuing cost of training.

The State of Tennessee has requested another amendment to this contract. The amendment is attached, and changes the definition of an "Experienced Officer" as:

i. A law enforcement officer who has been POST-certified in Tennessee with a break in service as a law enforcement officer of more than one (1) year but less than seven (7) years;or

ii. A law enforcement officer who has been POST-certified or the equivalent POST certification from any state in the United States, other than Tennessee, with a break in service of less than seven (7) years.

Staff recommends approval of this contract amendment.

Previous Commission Action

The City Commission entered into the original agreement on 8/14/23 with Resolution 2023-83.
