The Technology Department uses a Cisco enterprise class solution to manage the wireless networks at city buildings consisting of two management controllers and access points. Recently, the Library inquired about upgrading the wireless equipment to offer better service for their patrons. Technology staff has been working with Presidio, our Cisco vendor, to determine what equipment would be required to meet the library’s needs. Presidio recommends upgrading both the primary and backup wireless controllers, replacing the ten existing access points and adding ten additional access point to increase coverage and data throughput. The new Cisco equipment is available on state contract through Presidio for $52,314.92 which includes configuration of the controllers from Presidio.
Note that in addition to this purchase with Presidio, there will be additional costs for installing the cabling and access points for approximately $2,500. This work will be completed by the City's existing cabling contractor, and will not require additional City Commission approval since the dollar amount for those services is less than $10,000.
The Library is requesting the purchase of the wireless equipment and installation for approximately $55,000 total using funds from the John P. Holt bequest account. Approval of this purchase will authorize utilization of Holt funds for this purpose. Note that there will be $6,518.28 in additional ongoing annual maintenance for new equipment from the Technology operating budget.
Please see the Technology Director for any questions.
