REVIEW AND RECOMMENDATION TO THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS OF THE PROPOSED PLAZA IMPROVEMENTS FOR MARYLAND WAY PARK

The approval of the site plan for the HillCenter Brentwood project included a stairway connection down to Maryland Way Park from the future buildings located on the west side of the project. The stairway connection, which is almost completed will require some modification to the area in the park at the bottom of the stairs. The City has developed a plan for a pedestrian plaza that can serve as a gathering place for the park.

The proposed plan includes approximately 1,700 sq. ft. of area at the bottom of the stairway. The hardscape consists of pervious concrete pavers placed in a herringbone pattern and framed by a concrete ribbon. Seat walls are provided at the corners. A raised circular planter with a square tree well on either side of the planter are also provided on the plaza. The existing multi-purpose trail will be slightly reconfigured to accommodate the plaza area. The surface of the new portion of the trail will include a brushed concrete surface, and will be six feet wide.

The seat walls will be constructed of brick veneer and topped with a cast stone cap. Lighting is also proposed in the seat walls. Benches, trash receptacles a water fountain and bike racks are provided in the plaza.

Landscaping will be added in the plaza area in the raised circular planter and around its perimeter and on the west side of the multi-purpose trail.

Finally, a new concrete multi-purpose trail (6’ wide) will connect the existing path with Maryland Way, on the east side of the park, providing another access point.
